This year’s winter project was to move the coat room adjacent to the front door and move our office into the larger space previously used as the coat room. This switch makes it convenient for our guests to access the coat room immediately upon entering the Diamond Event Center where before they had to make their way down the main hall to find it. The switch centrally locates our office in between the ballrooms and also lets us have both our office and our showroom all in one spot! The larger office space has room to display all of our centerpieces, card boxes, china, chargers, silverware, glassware, napkin colors and folds, overlays, chair covers and sashes. A new custom built wood cabinet allows us even more storage space and a gorgeous wood conference table gives us lots of room to sit with clients and discuss their vision for their event. Along with the coat room and office upgrades we also added a handicap accessible family restroom complete with a baby changing station. With winter finally coming to an end the new coat room will not have much business this year but with wedding season heading into full swing the office/showroom will be busier than ever with brides and grooms planning their special day. It seems some customs have been around for centuries. They have been. From the bride’s veil and flowers to selecting bridesmaids and groomsmen to a father walking his daughter down the aisle are customs that have a special meaning that we still observe today.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   You may, however, discover that you and your groom may want to start new traditions that you can pass down to future generations. Because the customs that are often observed in wedding ceremonies today, were once new too.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;    Here are some “old world” customs, traditions and meaning that have been passed down throughout wedding history. What ones will you continue?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;White Wedding Dress:&lt;/strong&gt; A symbol of celebration in Roman ages; wealth - since it could only be worn once and not washed; purity and happiness in 19th and 20th centuries. Today it is a symbol of a woman’s marriage - happiness and celebration of starting a new life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue:&lt;/strong&gt; This custom comes from an Old English rhyme. Customs range from the bride wearing something that has been handed down in her family such as a handkerchief, jewelry, or a hat pin fastened inside the wedding gown. New - usually the wedding dress, shoes or undergarments. Borrowed - from a happily married woman (like a bridesmaid, mother, mother-in-law, or close friend), meaning her happiness will “rub off” on the new bride. Blue - several meanings have been passed down through time, but most notably blue represents fidelity, purity and love. A blue handkerchief, lingerie, jewelry, a garter, etc. Blue does not have to be part of the visible bridal ensemble.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The Bride’s Garter:&lt;/strong&gt; This comes from an Old English custom that wedding guests pilfered the bride’s dressing room, steal her stockings and fling them across the room called “flinging the stocking.” However, the tradition changed to only the groom retrieving the garter from his bride and throwing it to his single groomsmen (and later other single male wedding guests), and the one who caught it would be the next to marry.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Wedding Gown Train:&lt;/strong&gt; The length of a bride’s train was an indication of her rank in the royal court. The longer it was, the better was her stature with the king and queen. Today, it is completely optional to include a wedding gown train; oftentimes, the train is pinned up before the wedding reception, so that the bride and other guests do not step on it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Bride’s Maids Dresses:&lt;/strong&gt; A superstition from centuries ago believed that if all the bridal attendants wore the same dress as the bride, then it would confuse the evil spirits as who was the real bride. However, thankfully, traditions changed and bridal attendants no longer wear the same dress as the bride, in fact, it is completely acceptable if the bridesmaids wear different dresses according to their likeness. These five days were packed with classes covering all aspects of the catering business and a tradeshow with every imaginable product for the catering business! We have brought back lots of new ideas that we look forward to using at the Diamond Event Center. Placed on each table in the ballroom was a candid picture of the bride and groom each holding a large size piece of paper with a number on it. These personalized and fun wedding reception table placements delighted every guest who had to find their table.&lt;br /&gt;Each table placement picture was in a simple 5 x 7 frame with the numbers clearly displayed in the picture. This was one of the most unique wedding reception table placements we have seen at the Diamond Event Center in Brunswick, Ohio. Another recent Fall Themed Wedding Reception had tree names on the tables instead of numbers. Yet another couple chose to name their tables after Video Game Characters....so as you can see the possibilities are endless! Instead of colorful candy or bottled bubbles, the bride and groom place a card sized note at each guest's place setting which may read something such as:&lt;br /&gt;"In lieu of wedding favors, Brandy and Joe have a made a donation to the Cancer Society of Medina County in your honor. We both have lost a family member or friend to Cancer and we want to remember our loved ones with a donation. We thank you for attending, Brandy and Joe."&lt;br /&gt;This note often starts many conversations at the guest table as well, and sometimes even prompts guests to make an additional contribution to the charity or memorial fund.&lt;br /&gt;If you're in a quandary about what to put on your guests' tables, then consider making a contribution to a charity, memorial or scholarship fund of your choice as a unique wedding favor. We provided the tent, tables, chairs, linens, china, glassware, set up, appetizers, dinner, bar and staff. It was a beautiful day!  The pavillion that is on the property was used for the food, bar, appetizers, cake, gifts and dance floor. Now the beautiful new foyer should make guests feel that way as soon as they walk thru the front doors. The addition of the antique oak mantle and beautiful marble will also make a wonderful location for bridal and group pictures of all kinds. Plans are also in the works for a special piece of glass art work commissioned to a local glass artist, Tom Schemrich. The hope is that the art work should be installed sometime later in 2009.
